National Positions

Director/Assistant Director Selection Process

Applications will be posted on the NIRSA Championship Series volunteer website. The selection committee will review application materials and interview applicants as needed. At minimum, the selection committee will include:

  • Director of National Sport Programs or Designee
  • NIRSA Championship Series Vice Chair or Designee
  • NIRSA Championship Sport Work Team Chair
  • National Tournament Host Designee
  • Current Director for Associated Committee
  • Social Justice Task Force Member (if available)

All selections will be approved by the NIRSA Championship Series Executive Team.  Applicants will be notified of their initial application status within two (2) weeks of the application close date.

Committee Member Selection Process

    • Experience leading a diverse group of professionals and facilitating effective meetings
    • Prior experience as a tournament or committee director at a NIRSA state or regional tournament
  • Director Responsibilities
    • Through regular communication, lead a group of NIRSA members to provide premier championship experiences delivered by qualified experts within a safe and inclusive environment
    • Serve as a positive brand ambassador for the NIRSA Championship Series
    • Maintain a current NIRSA professional membership for the duration of the position term
    • Attend monthly tournament planning meetings
    • Communicate regularly with the NIRSA Championship Series executive team and NIRSA headquarters staff
    • Complete post event reports by established deadline
    • Review staff applications and make selection recommendations as needed
    • Maintain availability during the entirety of the event

    • Pre-Tournament
      • Time Commitment: 5-8 hours total: 2-3 for meetings, 2-3 for schedule planning, 1-2 for selection/communication/misc
      • Attend tournament planning meetings
        • Host committee meetings
        • Meeting with National Director of Officials
      • Review staff applications and make selection recommendations as needed or request by host institution/NIRSA
      • Recruit and select student officials
      • Organize logistics for training program of student officials including pre-tournament training and film analysis
      • Schedule meetings with the Officials Committee to plan pre-tournament training, etc. 
      • Communicate with tournament officials once finalized 
      • Host pre-tournament meeting for officials to prepare for the regional tournament
      • Communicate with the NIRSA Championship Series executive team and NIRSA headquarters staff as needed or requested
      • Organize a system that accurately and concisely tracks officials’ evaluations and rankings
      • Manage, train, and schedule committee members
      • Create officials game schedule for the start of the tournament
    • During the Tournament

        • Friday 6-9 hours (clinic, schedule, check-in, etc.)
        • Saturday – Outside of game hours 2-4 (meeting, schedules, etc.)

      • Serve as a liaison between officials and tournament administration with strategic focus on the participant experience
      • Oversee training program of student officials including pre-tournament training and film analysis

      • Serve on the Protest/Appeals Committee.
      • Lead the selection process for All-Tournament officials

    • Contact local vendors to schedule, plan, and provide all event equipment, supplies, and logistical needs for the tournament.

    • Work with host site to secure emergency action plan for facility and educate all event staff to standard operating procedures.
    • Complete daily inspection of all fields for playability and safety. Work with host site to improve any line marking, safety or equipment concerns.
    • Track and maintain the operating budget.
    • Set up site prior to the tournament to meet NIRSA brand standards and expectations.
    • Work with operations staff to set-up and teardown fields and hospitality each day of the tournament.

Director of Competition

The Director of Competition is responsible for ensuring that the event is executed in a manner consistent with NIRSA Championship Series Standards of Competition. Responsibilities include (in consultation with the Tournament Director):

  • Establishing rules of play (consult with Tournament Director and Director of Officials).
  • Creating and posting schedules of play.
  • Creating and printing game sheets/scorecards.
  • Recording and posting results of competition.
  • Recording statistics (where applicable) including sportsmanship issues (red/yellow cards, technical fouls, unsportsmanlike penalties, etc.)
  • Assign a Chair to direct the All-Tournament committee.
  • Selecting staff for the All-Tournament Committee (in consultation with the All-Tournament Chair).
  • Overseeing the All-Tournament Committee and all operations.

Director of Officials

The Director of Officials is responsible for recruiting student officials to work the tournament (or at least be involved in the officials selection process), for providing training for these officials, and for providing evaluation and positive feedback consistent with the highest standards of the officiating avocation and of NIRSA Championship Series principles of professional development. The Director of Officials is also responsible for selecting and directing clinicians and evaluators to assist with the training and evaluation of student officials. Responsibilities include:

  • Recruit student officials to work the tournament (or at least be involved in the officials selection process).
  • Provide training for these officials, and providing evaluation and positive feedback consistent with the highest standards of the officiating avocation and of NIRSA Championship Series principles of professional development.
  • Responsible for selecting and directing clinicians (Officials Committee) and evaluators to assist with the training and evaluation of student officials.
  • Select graduate assistants or outstanding undergraduates to serve on Officials Sub-Committee.
  • Select one committee member to serve as an Assistant Director. The Assistant Director capacity will be to assist in scheduling, evaluation summaries, and other duties that arise.

Qualification Standards for a NIRSA Championship Series Regional Tournament Director of Officials

All-Tournament Committee

  • The members of this committee will be responsible for selecting outstanding players for the tournament.
  • Their duties might include keeping stats, monitoring games, and an evaluation of sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills are critical for this position.

Committee Qualification Standards for a NIRSA Championship Series Regional or National Tournament

  • Currently employed or pursuing a career as a professional in the recreation field
  • If Professional staff should be a current NIRSA member
  • Willingness to learn and develop professionally in the field
  • Exhibit an interest or experience in student development
  • Available for entire tournament, including pre-tournament staff meetings
  • Chair position should be someone who has played the sport or has been on previous All-Tournament committees

Chair Qualification Standards for a NIRSA Championship Series Regional Tournament All-Tournament Chair

  • In addition to the Committee Qualification Standards
  • Current NIRSA Member for three-years
  • Served on the All-Tournament Committee at least two other NIRSA Championship Series events

Media Relations

  • This committee produces and distributes written, photo, and video content via numerous digital platforms throughout the tournament.
  • Duties include watching and reporting on games at various tournament sites, recording video, taking photos, posting updates to social media, writing game summaries and event recaps, and publishing content on tournament media including web sites and social media platforms.
  • The committee chair reports to the Tournament Director (Regional Tournament) or the Director of Competition (National Tournament).
  • In addition to the General Committee Qualification Standards for a NIRSA Championship Series Regional, recommended skills of committee members include:
    • Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas: web site management, social media strategies, digital photography, and/or digital videography.
    • Academic background in sports journalism, mass communication, and/or marketing.
    • Excellent written communication skills.
    • Availability for the entire tournament, particularly championship games, and attend all other events as directed by the Director of Competition.

  • Currently employed or pursuing a career as a professional in the recreation field.
  • If Professional staff should be a current NIRSA member.
  • Willingness to learn and develop professionally in the field.
  • Exhibit an interest or experience in student development.
  • Available for entire tournament, including pre-tournament staff meetings.

Officials Committee

  • The members of this committee will be responsible for evaluation and education of the student officials.
  • Their duties will include on court and video evaluation along with a pre-tournament education clinic.
  • It is necessary that the members of this committee be present for the entire tournament, including the pre-tournament staff meeting

Committee Qualification Standards for a NIRSA Championship Series Regional or National Tournament

  • Currently employed or pursuing a career as a professional in the recreation field
  • If Professional staff should be a current NIRSA member
  • Willingness to learn and develop professionally in the field
  • Exhibit an interest or experience in student development
  • Available for entire tournament, including pre-tournament staff meetings

Officials Sub-committee

  • The members of this committee will primarily be composed of graduate assistants or outstanding undergraduate students.
  • Sub-committee members will be teamed with member of the officials committee, providing ample opportunities for further student development.
  • On court/field and video evaluation along with a pre-tournament education clinic.

Committee Qualification Standards for a NIRSA Championship Series Regional or National Tournament

  • Currently employed or pursuing a career as a professional in the recreation field
  • Willingness to learn and develop professionally in the field
  • Exhibit an interest or experience in student development
  • Available for entire tournament, including pre-tournament staff meetings

Operations Committee

  • This committee will assist in anything having to do with running a tournament.
  • Provide supervision of games played, responding to medical and/or behavioral issues as well as operational issues such as equipment checkout, scorecards, etc.
  • Respond to grounds and physical plant issues.
  • Duties might also include court/field set up, keeping score, entering scores, trophy presentation, court set-up and break down, first aid and many other possible duties.
  • The Operations committee may vary in size from tournament to tournament.
