National Positions

Director/Assistant Director Selection Process

Applications will be posted on the NIRSA Championship Series volunteer website. The selection committee will review application materials and interview applicants as needed. At a minimum, the selection committee will include:

  • Director of National Sport Programs or Designee
  • NIRSA Championship Series Vice Chair or Designee
  • NIRSA Championship Sport Work Team Chair
  • National Tournament Host Designee
  • Current Director for Associated Committee
  • Social Justice Task Force Member (if available)

All selections will be approved by the NIRSA Championship Series Executive Team.  Applicants will be notified of their initial application status within two (2) weeks of the application close date.

Committee Member Selection Process

  • Director/Assistant Director responsible for associated committee
  • Social Justice Task Force Member (if available)

    • Prior experience as a tournament or committee director at a NIRSA state or regional tournament
  • Director Responsibilities
    • Through regular communication, lead a group of NIRSA members to provide premier championship experiences delivered by qualified experts within a safe and inclusive environment
    • Serve as a positive brand ambassador for the NIRSA Championship Series
    • Maintain a current NIRSA professional membership for the duration of the position term
    • Attend monthly tournament planning meetings
    • Communicate regularly with the NIRSA Championship Series executive team and NIRSA headquarters staff
    • Complete post-event reports by the established deadline

    • Work with the host site to secure an emergency action plan for the facility and educate all event staff on standard operating procedures.
    • Ensure daily inspection of all fields for playability and safety. Work with the host site to improve line marking, safety, or equipment concerns.
    • Track and maintain the operating budget.
    • Set up the site before the tournament to meet NIRSA brand standards and expectations.
    • Responsible for the set-up and teardown of playing surfaces and hospitality each day of the tournament.
    • Act as the liaison between NIRSA and host site staff for all logistics and tournament needs to ensure host site policies are enforced.

    • Assist the Director of Officials with training for all officials regarding Unified Sports rules and best practices

Co-Directors of Competition

The Co-Directors of Competition is responsible for ensuring that the event is executed in a manner consistent with NIRSA Championship Series Standards of Competition.

Required Elements for Eligibility:

  • Commitment to serve a minimum of five years in this position.
  • NIRSA professional membership throughout the appointment.
  • Availability to participate in monthly teleconference meetings.
  • Unrestricted access to the internet and good working knowledge of email and online systems.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.

Preferred qualifications for National Tournament Director of Competition:

  • Have served as Chair of All-Tournament Committee at a NIRSA Championship Series events.
  • Have served as Regional Soccer Coordinator.
  • Have experience in soccer as a player, coach, official, or volunteer.

Responsibilities, associated with the National Tournament, include (in consultation with the Tournament Director):

  • Coordinate the selection of teams to participate in the Championship Division.

The Director of Officials, in collaboration with the Tournament Director, Co-Directors of Competition, and the Assistant Director of Officials, is responsible for selection of officials. The Director of Officials, along with the Tournament Director, is also responsible for being involved in selecting any additional staff necessary to assist with the training and evaluation of these officials. 

Required Elements for Eligibility:

  • Two years of experience as an active official in the same sport (high school, college, USA Soccer Amateur Adult).
  • Have established relationships with officiating camps, organizations, or conferences (high school, college).

Responsibilities include (in consultation with the Tournament Director):

  • Serve on Protest and Appeals Committee.
  • Recruit and Select NISOA certified officials to work the tournament.
  • Provide training, evaluation, and feedback for selected officials, consistent with the highest standards of the officiating avocation and of NIRSA Championship Series principles of professional development.
  • Assist in the application and selection process for the Assistant Director of Officials.
  • Act as liaison between NIRSA and NISOA, in collaboration with the Tournament Director, in development to ensure successful tournament.
  • Assist in the development and oversight of a Student Official’s Development Program in collaboration with the Tournament Director, Co–Directors of Competition, and the Assistant Director of Competition (when applicable).
  • Assist in the coordination of travel for selected officials.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Tournament Director.

Assistant Director of Officials/Officials Assignors

The Assistant Director of Officials is a developmental role in preparation to serve the National Championships Series in future leadership roles. This position serves as the Official’s Assignor as well as support for the Director of Officials, Co-Directors of Competition, and Tournament Director.

The Director of Operations is responsible for ensuring that the event is executed in a safe and efficient manner that meet the standards of the NIRSA Championship Series.

  • Have experience in event management, host committees, volunteer management.

Responsibilities include (in consultation with the Tournament Director):

  • Contact local vendors to schedule, plan, and provide all event equipment, supplies, and logistical needs for the tournament.
  • Contact local vendors to schedule, plan, and provide all meals provided for NIRSA staff and officials. Work with host site to secure emergency action plan for facility and educate all event staff to standard operating procedures.
  • Complete daily inspection of all fields for playability and safety. Work with host site to improve any line marking, safety or equipment concerns.
  • Track and maintain the operating budget.
  • Set up site prior to the tournament to meet NIRSA brand standards and expectations.
  • Work with operations staff to set-up and teardown fields and hospitality each day of the tournament.
  • Act as the liaison between NIRSA and host site staff for all logistics and tournament needs to ensure host site policies are enforced.
  • Act as the point of contact for NIRSA during all emergencies.

Director of Unified Division

The Director of Unified Division is responsible for coordinating all aspects of the Unified Division at the NIRSA National Soccer Tournament and to ensure that the division is consistent with the NIRSA Championship Series Standards of Competition. This position will work with the other Directors and Committees in plans for the overall tournament experience and coordinating the Unified Division.

  • Communicate as the primary NIRSA contact for Special Olympics staff in regards to player eligibility, team selection, and registration for National Soccer Tournament
  • Once teams are selected in partnership with Special Olympics, serve as NIRSA National Soccer Championships liaison for the Unified Division teams participating
  • Review and update Unified Division rules to be a fair and consistent blend of NIRSA and Special Olympics soccer rules in conjunction with the Director of Student Officials
  • Schedule on-site meetings and registrations for Unified teams
  • Work with Co-Directors of Competition to create game schedule for tournament
  • Select the Assistant Director of Unified Division position (if one is needed)

Tournament Experience and Logistics
(T.E.A.L.)

The Tournament Experience and Logistics team members are responsible for ensuring that the volunteers create a premier championship experience and the Tournament is administered in a way that meet the standards of the NIRSA Championship Series.

Required for Eligibility:

  • NIRSA Membership throughout term of service.
  • Commitment to serve minimum of four years in this position. In each member’s fourth year, member is required to serve as Director of Tournament Experience and Logistics Team.
  • Availability to participate in teleconference meetings.
  • Institutional support from home institution.
  • Unrestricted access to the internet and good working knowledge of email and online systems.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications for Results Team:

  • Have experience in administrative tournament management, host committees, and/or volunteer management.
  • Have served on staff in one or more Championship Series Soccer Regional or National Tournaments.
  • Have experience in IMLeagues.com administration and roster management.

Responsibilities include (in consultation with the Tournament Directors):

  • Act as support system for functional areas of tournament administration throughout the tournament.
  • Provide oversight and supervision of all field marshalls, including hosting an orientation prior to the first day of tournament play.
  • Ensure an enhanced volunteer experience, including volunteer schedule management and staff morale.
  • Work with Coordinator for National Sport Programs to plan and execute tournament registration for all teams to register and verify rosters.
  • Provide oversight and ensure execution of assessment plans.
  • Prepare all Game sheets for tournament games.
  • Utilize IMLeagues or similar software to input, track, and post scores from all games played throughout tournament.
  • Work with the Director and Assistant Director of Officials to ensure all officials are eligible to work and are paid for all games worked. Additionally, track all games worked by the staff of officials. 
  • Track All-Tournament Team votes and report to Directors of Competition.
  • Prepare championship game scripts for presentation prior to all championship games.
  • Work with the Director and Assistant Director of Operations to ensure execution of volunteer appreciation reception upon completion of tournament play. 
  • All other duties as assigned by Tournament Directors.

Regional Coordinator Position Description

Eligibility

The minimum of two Regional Coordinator positions shall be filled by current NIRSA professional members. Preferred qualifications include:

  • Regional soccer experience in the form of league commissioner, regional tournament volunteer, Regional Assistant Coordinator or other applicable service
  • National Tournament Volunteer experience

Reporting

The Regional Coordinator Position shall report to the Co-Directors of Competition for the National Tournament throughout the year. In the event the National Co-Directors of Competition are not available, this position shall report to the NIRSA Soccer Work Team Chair. Additional support for this position shall always be available from NIRSA Headquarters.

Appointment Process

The appointment process will be by application. These applications will be reviewed by a committee consisting of the following members:

  • Co – Directors of Competition for the National Tournament
  • National Tournament Director/Director of National Sport Programs, NIRSA
  • National Soccer Work Team Chair
  • Current Regional Coordinator in the appropriate region (if one is in term)

Timelines for these applications will vary annually and will be posted on the NIRSA website.

Term

Regional Coordinators will serve a three year term. The minimum number of Regional Coordinator positions per region shall be two, with the option to have more positions filled if needed. These Regional Coordinators shall serve staggered terms if at all possible. Regional Coordinators are eligible to serve multiple terms but they must complete the application process and be appointed for this additional service at the conclusion of each term to be considered. Each term shall begin on March 1st.

  • Serve as NIRSA liaison reporting regional rankings, bid recommendations, and other pertinent information
  • Responsible for the recruitment, selection, and guidance of the regional leadership team
  • Disburse and maintain accurate information/reports for constituents and leadership team using appropriate communication methods (e-mail, website, forms, etc.)
  • Align and instill NIRSA values within the administration of league(s) and tournament(s) operations
  • Ensure successful execution of league(s) coordination and management through effective communication with league representatives
