After serious consideration, it is with disappointment that we are announcing the cancellation of the 2021 NIRSA Regional Basketball Championships due to the continuing concerns with the COVID-19 virus and the number of the teams that will be unable to travel in the spring. NIRSA Championship Series leadership, NIRSA HQ, and the NIRSA Services Corporation Board have been monitoring the precautions from NIRSA member institutions, CDC, state and local public health organizations regarding events and gathering, travel, testing, COVID-19 policies, and social distancing. Given current information, leadership is cancelling the spring season of basketball and soccer for the safety and wellbeing of our participants, volunteers, and staff involved with the tournaments.
The NIRSA Services Corporation and NIRSA Championship Series are committed to bringing a premier experience to our participants and stakeholders. While some may be disappointed with this decision, the priority of the health and wellbeing of the players, tournament staff, and host communities who participate in and support the NIRSA Championship Series cannot be ignored.
The NIRSA Championship Series work teams will monitor university’s travel bans/restrictions, IM participation on campus, sport club practice, etc., as plans are made for spring of 2022.
For engagement of players, members and officials in the spring, the team will be offering some virtual opportunities such as: NIRSA Championship Series Esports Tournament featuring Rocket League (April 8-10), skills challenge, and student officials training.
