The Dixie State University Trailblazers and the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks squared off in a showdown for the ages in the National Championship for the Men’s Intramural Division. The Lumberjacks took an early 8 point lead in the game, but the Trailblazers went on a 4-0 scoring run to make the game 18-14 with 8 minutes left in the first half. The Lumberjacks answered with a 6-0 scoring run of their own, forcing the Trailblazers to take a timeout with the score 24-14 with 7 minutes left in the half.

After fighting back from the 10 point deficit, the Trailblazers managed to cut the Lumberjacks lead to just 3 points. At the half the Lumberjacks led the Trailblazers 28-25.

The second half saw a lot of action offensively from both teams. With twelve minutes to go in the half, the score was tied 37-37.

With less than four minutes to go in the game, the Trailblazers had fallen behind by 5 points, but closed the gap with made free throws a clutch 3 pointer by Max Wilson to tie the game 48-48. Julian Lagrant answered for the Lumberjacks with another pointer to take the lead 51-48.

In the final 30 seconds of the game, the Lumberjacks were up by 1 point and were fouled. After making one free throw to put them up by two, the Trailblazers had one last scoring attempt. The Trailblazers called a timeout to draw up a play. The shot wouldn’t go but a jump ball gave the ball back to Dixie State with 2 seconds left on the clock. On the inbound, the Trailblazers got off a shot, but they couldn’t rattle it home.

The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks cut down the nets as the Men’s Intramural Champions at the 2019 NIRSA National Basketball Tournament.

Cody Edwards of the Trailblazers went for 11 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 steal. He was named honored as an All-American for the Men’s Intramural Division.

Jeff Martin of the Lumberjacks went for 15 points and 3 rebounds. He was honored as the Most Valuable Player for the Men’s Intramural Division.
