If the first hour of games for the NIRSA National Basketball Championship is a sign of things to come, we are in for a fantastic tournament.  The electricity in the air intensified as whistles blew and tip-offs began, signifying the beginning of the tournament and the vying for playoff positioning.  All teams wanted a quick start and an early win to take pressure off of themselves and to get that much closer to their championship opportunity.

In the Men’s Intramural Division, Dixie State is off to a fast start, with a 69-27 win over Peru State.  Ryan Collins of Dixie State led the charge with 14 points (making 4 threes), 2 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal.  Ryan and Dixie State kept the gas pedal down to secure the win and the important points-for category, for seeding.

In the Women’s Club Division, UC-Davis and Texas A&M had a much closer game, but UC-Davis held off Texas A&M and finished with a 32-28 win.  Ariyanna Cashen for UC-Davis was the game MVP for UC-Davis, racking up 8 points and 10 rebounds for the team.

It took not one, but TWO overtimes to decide the SRSU and Georgia Southern game in the Men’s Intramural Division.  Both teams went back and forth all game, but in the end, SRSU gained the upper hand and defeated Georgia Southern 70-63.  Raphael Watts for SRSU led the way with 24 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals.
