We are past the first set of games at the 2018 NIRSA Soccer Championships and we are off to a great start.

Defending women’s national champs UCSB opened defense of their title with a 2-0 win over ’17 quarterfinalist Ohio State. Goals by Lauren Lampl and Hannah Peck gave UCSB the margin needed to secure 3 points in Pool A.

Defending men’s national champs BYU defeated ’16 champs Virginia 4-2.  It was back and forth as Virginia opened with 1-0 and 2-1 (halftime) leads. 3 unanswered goals for BYU in the 2nd half was the difference to take the lead in Pool A.

In the women’s championship division, ’17 finalist Texas played to a 0-0 draw with Michigan State. ’17 semifinalist Colorado defeated Northeastern 2-1. Illinois defeated NC State 3-0.

In the men’s championship division, ’17 quarterfinalist Michigan finished strong with a 6-2 victory over ’17 open champion Arizona. Virginia Tech defeated Illinois “Orange” 3-1. ’17 round of 16 participant North Carolina played to a 2-2 draw with Colorado State with goal in the final seconds of the match.

In the men’s open division, ’17 quarterfinalist Miami (FL) defeated Minnesota State 6-0 and Missouri won 1-0 over Cal State Fullerton in pool A. In pool B, Cornell defeated Northern Iowa 5-2 (Illinois “Blue” received forfeit win over Houston CC). In pool C, semifinalist San Diego State (pictured) defeated Georgia College 2-0 and LSU won over Villanova 1-0.
