The playoff picture is getting clearer as we advance closer to the end of pool play games.

In the men’s championship division, defending national champion BYU will be back in the knockout rounds to defend their title. A hat trick from Tanner Whitworth gave them the victory over Pittsburgh 3-0.  Their win clinched pool D and a spot in the championship bracket.

In the women’s championship division, ’17 quarterfinalist Ohio State stays alive in the championship hunt with a late 2nd half goal by Morgan Lutz to give them the 1-0 victory over Virginia.

In the rest of the men’s championship division, North Carolina cruised to a 6-1 victory over San Jose State. UNC now leads pool A for the moment. Illinois “Orange” (pictured) stays alive in the championship division with a Zachary Barangan PK in the 2nd half to win over Oregon 1-0. Fordham ends Arizona’s national championship hopes 3-1 with 2 goals from Dan Sydor and the insurance goal from Ferran Pueyo.

In the rest of the women’s championship division, NC State and Fordham played to a 1-1 draw (Illinois still leads pool B). Northeastern will not return to the championship bracket as their hopes ended at the hands of Gonzaga 3-0. Michigan State defeated The College of New Jersey 3-1.

In women’s open pool D, ’17 quarterfinalist James Madison defeated Denver 5-0 and another ’17 quarterfinalist Grand Valley defeated Missouri 3-0. In pool E, ’17 semifinalist San Diego State won 2-0 over Georgia Tech and Colorado School of Mines tied Maryland 0-0. In pool F, USC fought on to a 7-0 victory over Kennesaw State while Boston College flew past Colorado-Colorado Springs 5-0.
