Grand Canyon Captures Women’s IM National Championship

Grand Canyon Hoop Dreams avenged an overtime loss on Saturday, knocking off Georgia Southern 48-31 to win the women’s intramural national championship on Sunday at the 2017 NIRSA National Basketball Championships, hosted by Ohio State University.

Grand Canyon started off hot and Georgia Southern was ice cold.  The Lopes were up 17-1 after 11 minutes of play including three 3-pointers.  Georgia Southern turned to forward Smiljana Cuk, who scored 10 points in the final 8 minutes.  Trailing by 33-13 at the break, the Eagles came out fired up, posting at 6-2 run.  But, Grand Canyon regained the momentum and cruised to victory 48-31.

Tournament MVP Hannah Fredrick had 12 points for Grand Canyon.  Fellow All-Tournament Team member Sabrina Johnson added 9 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Mariah Kempf, another All-Tournament selection for the Lopes, tallied 9 points.

For Georgia Southern, All-Tournament Team honoree Smiljana Cuk finished with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Dawona Magwood, also on the All-Tournament Team, added 11 points.
