Georgia Tech downed Valdosta State 48-39 to win the men’s IM division national title in a battle of teams from the Peach State at the 2017 NIRSA National Basketball Championships, hosted by Ohio State University in Columbus.

Valdosta State scored the first bucket of the game, but Georgia Tech jumped in front on a 6-0 run and held the lead throughout the first half, up as many as 7, before settling for a 28-23 advantage at the break. The game never was closer as the Yellow Jackets held onto a comfortable lead throughout the second half, keeping the Blazers stifled enroute to a 9-point victory.
Tournament MVP Patrick Lamar led the Yellow Jackets with 20 points and 9 rebounds in the championship win. Austin Card added 10 for Tech. For Valdosta State, Edward Culpetter had 11 points. Rodrick Chandler grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds.

UCF’s Marko Smith hit a three-pointer with 6.9 seconds left to send its semifinal with Georgia Tech to overtime, but the Yellow Jackets dominated the extra period, shutting out UCF enroute to a 65-56 OT victory. Georgia Tech will meet in-state rival Valdosta State in the final today at 12 Noon ET. Valdosta State eliminated Georgia Southern 46-42.
Tech had balanced scoring with five players in double figures. Patrick Lamar posted a team-high 16 points, Michael Downing 14, Austin Card 11, Martin Cuesta 11, and Zion Thomas 10. For UCF, Steven Shipwash notched a game-high 24 points and Killian Ritchie added 14.
In VSU’s 4-point win, Bryce Adair posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds and Rodrick Chandler also grabbed 10 boards to lead the Blazers. For Georgia Southern, Remon Robertson had 13 points and Javius Mitchell added 12.
