NC A&T, Angelo St, UCF, Southern Advance to Women’s Semis

Kaila Doby’s 40-yard interception return set up a Tiffany Ellick TD run as North Carolina A&T knocked off 2015 finalist Florida A&M 13-6 in women’s quarterfinal action this afternoon.  A&T had taken an early 7-0 lead when La’Quana Hordge found Marquisha Tucker with a TD pass.  FAMU closed the gap to 7-6 on a touchdown by Angie Smith.  But Doby’s 4th quarter INT and a 4th down stop with 45 seconds left sealed the victory for A&T.

NC A&T advances to face Angelo State, a 19-14 winner over Howard, in the semifinals later today.  Angelo State grabbed an early two score lead but had to hold off a furious 4th quarter comeback by Howard.  Howard drove downfield in the game’s closing minute but was stopped on 4th and goal with a key sack by Izzy Bluso.

In the other women’s semifinal later today, Southern will meet defending national champion UCF.  UCF shutout Texas State 18-0 while Southern defeated Cumberland 32-12.

In men’s playoff action, defending national champion Valdosta State defeated SE Missouri 40-6.  They will face UTSA, a 41-6 winner over Bloomsburg, in the quarterfinals. Georgia College and Angelo State also advanced to quarterfinal play with wins at 1:15.
