Several offenses had trouble warming up on a cold morning in Pensacola as the 2016 NIRSA National Flag Football Championships got underway at Ashton Brosnaham Park.

Devon Wilde’s three touchdown performance helped lead the defending co-rec national champion Angelo State IM Legends to an opening game shutout of the UCF Citronauts 38-0.  Fellow 2015 co-rec finalist Valdosta State P-Rex also started its tournament run with a shutout, 49-0 over Georgia Southern.  UWF downed Stockton 39-0 and New Mexico State defeated USF 42-0 in other opening game shutouts in the co-rec division.

Mississippi State rallied from a halftime deficit to down UT Dallas 24-16.  Kymesa Andrew ran in a TD and caught another and Nick Jones was on the receiving end of a Antonio Andrew TD pass for the Bulldogs in the victory.  Chris Nguyen and Tien Phan scored for UT Dallas in the defeat.

In the lone women’s pool play game at 8:30 am, 2015 finalist Florida A&M had no trouble with Missouri S&T, posting a 47-0 victory.  Christina Mattis, Aaliyah Barrington-Johnson, Sydney-Taylor Heyward, and Angie Smith all scored touchdowns for Simply Marvelous in the win.

Pool play games continue for all three collegiate divisions — men’s, women’s, and co-rec — throughout the day Friday.  Kickoff times today are 8:30, 9:45, 11:15, 1:30, 3:00, and 4:30 Central Time.
