Penn State Wins Men’s Open Title

A header by Robbie Edwards in the 70th minute broke a 1-1 tie and propelled Penn State to the open division championship at the 2016 NIRSA National Soccer Championships in Foley, Alabama.

Penn State jumped on the board in the first half on a goal from Tournament MVP Matthew Lundstrom.  But, Oregon fought back to even the score at 1 on Rikunosuke Kawashima’s goal midway through the 2nd half.  That set up some tense minutes as the teams worked to control the ball for a go-ahead attempt.  Edwards was able to emerge from the crowd in the box to redirect a free kick into the goal for the Nittany Lions.

This is Penn State men’s first open division title and second NIRSA championship overall.  The Nittany Lions also won the men’s championship division title in 2000. Oregon was seeking to become the first team since James Madison (1999 & 2000) to win consecutive open division titles.

Tournament MVP Matthew Lundstrom was joined by three other Nittany Lions on the All-Tournament Team. Oregon also had four players earn All-Tournament honors.
