Oregon, USC, UCLA, Va Tech Advance to Women’s Open Semifinals

The Pac 12 will have three of the four semifinal teams in the women’s open playoffs Saturday after wins by Oregon, USC, and UCLA in the quarterfinal round that closed out Friday’s action at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex in Foley, Alabama.  Virginia Tech of the ACC will complete the semifinal group, which plays at 8:00 am Central Saturday morning.

Oregon downed San Diego State 2-1.  Genevieve Dupre and Therese Wichmann scored for the Ducks.  Dayna Strosnider put in a gola for the Aztecs in the 80th minute, but it was not enough in the defeat.

UCLA needed kicks from the mark to eliminate James Madison.  After a scoreless regulation and extra time, the match moved to kicks.  The goalkeepers remained solid during PKs.  After both teams were successful in round 1, both goalkeepers came up with saves in round 2.  UCLA was blocked again in round 3, but JMU hit the post for no goal.  In round 4, UCLA pushed one in high left and JMU’s attempt was saved.  JMU survived with another save in the 5th round, but UCLA blocked the final JMU shot to preserve a 2-1 advantage in PKs and advance to the semifinals.

Virginia Tech shutout Ohio 3-0 behind goals from Emily Fitzsimmons and Kelly Kampfmueller.  USC blanked Cornell on 3 second half goals, 3-0.

Oregon and USC will battle in one semifinal at 8:00 am Central Time Saturday morning.  Virginia Tech and UCLA will battle in other.
